Chapter 20: Yield

Dain's POV

I had promised not to speak for her.

I had not promised my body would obey me.

The pack drew back into a ring on the oak boards, and Halvard dropped his knife and shed his clothes in three quick pulls.

His wolf came up grey and enormous, scarred across the muzzle, nearly the weight of mine.

Wynn stood across from him in white fur, with the shoulders of a wolf half his size.

I felt my own wolf throw himself against my ribs.

He wanted to go through the ring, put himself in front of her, and finish it.

I locked both fists against my thighs until the knuckles cracked.

"Majesty," Ansel said quietly, at my elbow. "Breathe."

"Don't speak to me."

"As you like."

Halvard went in first.

He was quick for his size, and his jaws closed on the air where her throat had been.

Wynn went under him.

She was out of the cellar with eight years of stillness, and she had never been taught a thing, and I understood from the very first lunge that nobody had taught her because she did not need it.

She went for his foreleg.

Her teeth sank in above the joint, and Halvard screamed, a high, strange sound from a throat that size.

He threw her off.

She hit the boards on her side, and my whole body jerked forward half a step.

The eldest's stick came down in front of my boots.

"The claim is hers," she said, without turning her head. "Stay where you are, Majesty."

I stayed.

Halvard lunged again.

This time his weight caught her, and his teeth found her shoulder, and blood showed bright on the white.
