Chapter 5: Below the Salt

Halvard sent for me at ten the next morning, and he sent a boy, not a wolf.

The boy knocked and said, "The Alpha asks for Miss Wynn in the study. Alone."

I looked at the wall between my room and Dain's.

I hadn't said his name. I was not going to say it for this.

I took the shawl and went.

The Alpha's study was the room with the green leather books. I had never been inside.

Halvard sat behind a wide desk with his hands folded on a sheet of paper.

"Sit down, girl."

I stayed standing.

"As you like." He turned the paper toward me. "Read it."

It was a statement in a clerk's neat hand.

I, Wynn Crane, ward of Ironbark, born in this pack, do swear that I am no Hollowmere child and that I know of no raid.

There was a line for my name.

"I'm not Wynn Crane," I said.

"You're anything I write on the paper." He said it without heat. "You'll sign that. Then you will marry Fenn at the new year, and in time you will be Luna of this pack. A better life than a cellar."

"And if I don't sign?"

"Then someone has stolen a war roll from the Alpha's own cellar. Under Crown law that is a hanging."

My heart began to pound, and I kept my face still.

"Nobody saw me take anything."

"Nobody had to." He smiled. "Who else has the key? Who else sleeps among the books? The King's clerk is going to be thorough, and I'll be asked who might have done it."
