Chapter 6: The Raid

The Blackwater warriors came across the river at the shallows, snarling.

Twelve wolves hit the Ironwood bank, and Ironwood met them in the mud.

Dane shifted in one stride, a lean russet wolf, and went straight for the beta.

"Stay back!" Molly shouted at me. "You've got no pack, no protection, and you've been bleeding for four days!"

She was right, and I didn't care.

I let Sable come.

It was my first shift since the bathroom floor.

It hurt in places I hadn't known I had.

Then it didn't hurt.

My wolf was black and furious, and she wanted every one of them.

I hit the first warrior in the chest and put him on his back in the water.

I felt Lorcan before I saw him.

The thread flared hot.

A gray wolf the size of a pony came pounding down the bank, snapping at his own pack.

He shouldered a warrior off Molly.

He threw another one into the reeds.

He was in the thick of it, huge and bloody, and every Blackwater wolf he passed hesitated.

I didn't wait to understand.

I was angry, and he was the one I had wanted to hurt for days.

I hit him from the side.

We went down together in the shallows, jaws locked on each other's scruffs, and the river closed over my head.

He didn't bite down.

I felt him not do it.

He held me, rolled with me, and let me tear at his shoulder.

The thread between us burned with something that wasn't fighting at all.
