"The Last Word category," the host said.
He turned the sealed card over in his fingers.
"Sisters."
The audience laughed.
Then it groaned, all three hundred of them.
I looked at the producer.
She was standing in the wings with her arms folded, and she didn't smile, but her glasses flashed.
"You have thirty seconds to write your wager," the host said.
The screen at my podium lit up, with the stylus on its cord.
Sixteen thousand dollars.
He had fifteen thousand four hundred.
Everybody who watches the show knows the math.
If he bets it all and gets it right, he has thirty thousand eight hundred.
To cover him, I need to bet fourteen thousand eight hundred and one.
My dad's rule was simple.
Keep a thousand back.
I looked across the stage.
Gannon was writing already.
He didn't hesitate. He never does.
I knew exactly what he was writing, because he'd told me in a concrete hallway with confetti in his beard.
