I wiped my hands on my apron.
Barb looked at me through the window and shook her head. Don't.
I went out anyway.
The kitchen door swung shut behind me.
The whole dining room went quiet. Even the kids.
I walked to the counter and stood across from her.
"You wanted the cook," I said. "Here I am."
Clarissa looked me up and down.
"You smell like fryer oil."
"I've been working. You should try it sometime."
Somebody at a booth laughed out loud, then covered their mouth.
Clarissa's smile tightened.
She turned a little toward the ring light.
"I came here tonight to ask you, woman to woman, to stop," she said. "Stop the lies. Stop the custody games. Drop it."
"No."
"You don't understand." She leaned in. "You have nothing. No marriage. No claim. I'm his wife. I have the certificate."
