Chapter 5: You're Nobody
Nobody said anything.
Jonathan stood between us with his mouth half open.
Clarissa stepped past him like he was a coat rack.
She laid the lilies across my feet on top of the blanket.
Lilies. The flower people send to funerals.
"You look awful," she said sweetly. "I'm so sorry about the car."
"Get out of my room."
"Your room?" She tilted her head. "Jonathan's insurance is paying for this room."
The nurse looked from her to me and slowly put down her clipboard.
Behind the curtain, Dolores turned her TV all the way off.
Clarissa sat down in the chair Jonathan had used, crossed her legs, and smoothed her coat over her knee.
"I want you to know I'm not angry," she said.
"You're not angry."
"No. I feel sorry for you. I always have." She looked at my ears. "Those look nice on you, by the way."
My hand went up before I could stop it.
She smiled.
"Here's what's going to happen," she said. "You're going to take that post down. You're going to apologize for harassing a married couple. And then you're going to go quietly, because you're a homewrecker, Ellie, and the whole internet is about to figure that out."
"A homewrecker."
"You lived in my husband's house for eight years. What would you call it?"
Jonathan finally found his voice.
"Clary. Not here."
"Then where?" she snapped at him. "You let this happen."
