Chapter 14: What Brendan Owes

I put on Clive's gray sweatshirt and my jeans while he stood at the door with his hand on the bolt.

"You don't have to let him in," Clive said.

"I know."

"Say the word and I'll tell him to leave."

"Open it."

Brendan stood in the hall in the same coat, unshaven, with a paper cup in each hand.

He looked at the sweatshirt.

He looked at Clive's bare chest and the mark my hand had left on his shoulder.

His face did something small and ugly, and then he put it away.

"I didn't come about that," he said.

"Good," I said. "You don't get an opinion on that."

He held out a cup.

"Coffee. I didn't know how you take it now."

"I don't take it from you."

He set both cups on the floor of the landing.

"Gianna called me at four this morning," he said. "She was crying. She said Carla had been saying terrible things about her, and that her father wouldn't look at her."

"And you went."

"I went to Maureen's. She was on the stairs in her coat. She said you'd found out something and that you'd lie about it."

He swallowed.

"I sat with her for three hours, Justine. I held her hand."

"Why are you telling me?"

"Because she kept saying 'she'll show you a paper, and it'll be fake.' Nobody had told me there was a paper."

Clive went very still beside me.

I took the letter out of my coat on the chair and held it up, folded.

"This paper?"
