Chapter 5: One Coffee

Sage was sitting cross-legged on my bed when I got home, with the lights off and two mugs of tea going cold.

"You didn't wait for me at the door," I said.

"I wanted to see if you'd tell me on your own."

"Tell you what?"

"What you've been carrying around since Saturday." She handed me a mug. "You came back from the Larkin Room last night and sat on your bed without talking for an hour."

I told her what Ben had said.

She listened with her chin on her knee.

"He said you nodded," she repeated. "Like it was an accusation."

"Like I'd done it to him."

"That's strange. He doesn't even know you."

"I know."

"Rory, I think there's a version of this where he's just on Preston's side."

"He turned the lights on for me. He told Brooks to leave."

"He told the whole room," she said. "He didn't tell Preston."

I had no answer to that.

Sage put down her mug and picked at the edge of my blanket.

"Okay. I have to tell you something, and I should have told you on Sunday."

"What?"

"Preston asked me out. Twice."

I stared at her.

"Once at the mixer in October. Once the week before your jacket." She winced. "I said no both times. I didn't tell you, because I didn't want you to feel weird about it."

"Why would I feel weird?"

"Because you liked him."

My face went hot again, and I looked away.

"I stopped liking him in a private room on Saturday night," I said. "It took about a minute."
