Chapter 18: A Choice
"Take the children inside," I said.
The cook took them.
Clover stared at Cordelia over the cook's shoulder.
"Her face is purple," she announced.
The blue doors shut.
I walked out to the edge of the ash.
Aldric came with me and stopped one step behind, at my shoulder, the way he'd run on the ridge.
"Who hit you?" I asked.
"Who do you think?" She touched her cheek with one glove. "I lost the child. He doesn't like it when I lose things."
"Is that the offer? You want sympathy?"
She laughed.
It sounded like it hurt.
"I want you gone," she said. "Not dead. Gone."
"Why the difference?"
"Because if he kills you in the circle, every Alpha on the continent watches a silver wolf die. Then nobody will ever believe I'm the princess. Not really."
She lifted her chin.
"So you're going to withdraw. Tonight. Take the brats, take him if you want him, and go somewhere far. Be a nanny again. You're good at it."
"And if I don't?"
"Then my father kills you in front of everyone, and I get crowned anyway. Not believed. But crowned."
She smiled at Aldric then.
The old knife smile, on half a face.
"And my first act as Queen will be to take royal wards," she said. "Any child, from any pack. It's the law. Your little reader and the screamer. They'll come and live with me."
Aldric didn't move.
I felt him not move.
"You hate them," I said.
"I hate them," Cordelia agreed. "They smelled like you. Everything in that house smelled like you. The kettle, the stairs, his son's hair. I married a man whose whole house belonged to the help."
"Go home, Cordelia," I said. "Tell him no."
She looked at me a long moment.
