Chapter 24: Every Morning
"Not yet," I said.
Mags looked at me a long moment.
Then she looked down the dock at Aldric, who was trying to get a sleeping Clover out of the coat pile without waking her and failing.
"Tell him tonight," she said. "Or I will. And I'll do it badly."
I told him at the end of the dock, an hour later, with snow coming down on the black water.
He didn't say anything at first.
He went very still.
Then he breathed in, close to my hair, slow.
And he found it.
His eyes went gold.
He sat down on the dock, right there in his wedding suit, in the snow, because his legs had stopped holding him.
"I'm going to be there," he said. "For all of it. Every night. Every morning."
"I know."
"No. Listen. I wasn't there for theirs. I'm going to be there for this one."
"Aldric. I know."
He put his face against my stomach and held on.
Behind us, at the far end of the dock, Arlo and Mags were dancing to nothing, and Clover was asleep with a snowball still in her fist.
That was a year ago.
His mouth was on my ear before I was awake.
"Elspeth."
My name, low and warm, the way he said it every morning.
One year of mornings.
It still undid me.
I kept my eyes closed and let him kiss down my neck.
His beard scraped my skin.
His hand slid under the flannel shirt.
"No bra," he said against my throat. "You planned this."
"I always plan this."
His fingers found my clit before I finished the sentence.
I gasped and my hips moved on their own, pressing up into his hand.
"Good girl," he said. "Don't open your eyes. Just feel it."
I didn't open them.
His fingers circled slow, the way he knew I liked.
The gray dawn light was cold on my face.
Under the quilt, his body was all heat.
I was already wet.
"You wake up soaked for me, don't you?" he said. "Every time."
"Every time."
His thumb pressed down on my clit.
I made a sound I didn't mean to make.
"Shh," he said, laughing low in my ear. "The whole hall will hear you."
"Then you'd better fuck me quietly, Alpha."
His fingers slid inside me.
I bit my lip and arched off the bed.
He worked me slow, his thumb circling while his fingers curled.
"You say my name," I told him. "Say it again."
"Elspeth."
I came with my hand over my own mouth, shaking.
He didn't stop.
He kept his fingers inside me through it, drawing it out.
"God," I whispered when I could breathe. "Okay. My turn."
I pushed the quilt down.
