Chapter 18: Red Wine
Nobody spoke.
The elders looked at their hands.
The captains looked at Michael.
Michael didn't look at anyone.
He stepped away from the empty chair at Ottavio's right hand and pushed it in, square to the table.
Then he twisted her father's black onyx ring off his finger.
He walked the length of the room with it.
He didn't put it in front of Ottavio.
He set it down on the green felt in front of the port captain, beside the sealed brown envelope.
Then he went and stood by the door with his hands at his sides.
He hadn't said a word.
Ottavio's smile stayed where it was, but his eyes followed the ring.
"That belongs at the head of the table," he said.
"It belongs to Benedetto," the port captain said. He laid his own hand over it. "I'll hold it until the districts say who it goes to."
"And the books?" The North End captain nodded at the envelope. "We said we'd read them tonight."
"We did." Ottavio spread his hands.
"But the table is short a seat now. Benedetto's books shouldn't be opened by a broken table. We name a man to the empty chair first. Then we read."
