Chapter 19: Same Road
"Which floor?" Francesca said.
She was already out of bed, pulling on yesterday's jeans with the phone against her shoulder.
"Don't come alone," Michael said. "I'm sending a car."
"I'll take a taxi."
"Francesca."
She hung up.
The intensive care unit at Mass General was on the eleventh floor.
At three in the morning the corridor was bright and empty and smelled of hand gel.
Nino lay behind a glass wall with a tube in his mouth.
His face was purple down one side, and his white mustache had dried blood in it.
A machine breathed for him in long, patient pulls.
His flat cap lay in a plastic bag on the chair by the bed, with his wallet and his keys.
Francesca stood at the glass with her palms flat on it.
A nurse came out and asked if she was family.
"Yes," Francesca said.
The nurse looked at her face and didn't ask anything else.
"He hit the seawall at about forty," she said. "His head took most of it. We'll know more when the swelling comes down."
"Will he wake up?"
"We'll know more when the swelling comes down."
