Chapter 26: Mama
The Revere captain's wife was the first to speak.
"Head of the family," she said. "Until when, Ottavio?"
"Until Benedetto's grandson is old enough to sit in the chair himself." He smiled up the staircase, toward Claudia's door. "I'm only keeping it warm."
The wives murmured.
Francesca buttoned her coat.
Ottavio watched her do it over the heads of the women.
"You'll want to be there, Francesca," he said. "You've always liked a family dinner."
She went out past the lilies without answering.
In the rental she took out her phone and looked at the photograph of the frame.
03/2019.
Then she played her father's voice through the little speaker, very low.
"Not the elders. The captains."
She knew what the elders would say if she stood up with a tape.
They needed somebody who could say the tape was true.
Somebody who had been there in 1998.
The next Sunday was All Saints' Day.
Her father used to take the family to the cemetery the morning after, on All Souls', with armfuls of roses from the greenhouse.
So Francesca knew where her mother would be on Sunday afternoon.
