Chapter 29: The Feast
"Nino, go back to bed," Francesca said into the phone.
"I'll go to bed when Benedetto's men hear him." He coughed. "Thirteen days. Have somebody iron my good suit."
He went home to Revere that night with Michael's man in a chair outside his door.
Francesca spent the next twelve days on her father's face.
She cleaned the portrait in her hotel room an inch at a time, with swabs and solvent and the window open to the cold.
Under it, the gray suit came back, and the white dress, and her own small scowl.
On the eleventh day her father's eyes came up out of the varnish.
On the Wednesday before the Feast she called the North End captain's wife.
"The picture of your grandson," Francesca said. "The ultrasound. Do you still have the printout?"
"In his baby book," the woman said slowly. "Why?"
"Bring it on Saturday. Please. Don't show it to anyone."
"I'll bring it," the woman said.
On Friday the port captain sent two of his men for the portrait.
"Ottavio wants it right behind the head table," one of them said. "So he's under Benedetto when they name him."
