Chapter 16: The Last Paragraph
Thaddeus made the eggs himself, and they were terrible.
"Don't say it," he said, and set the plate in front of her.
"They're crunchy, Grandpa."
"The pan was too hot. I'm seventy-four and I was drugged for weeks. I'm allowed a bad egg."
Margot ate one anyway.
Through the kitchen window she could see the guards at the gate.
Past them, Elias sat in the driver's seat of the black car.
He had driven her out at seven and would not come in.
He'd said Thaddeus should have her to himself.
She turned her wrist over, and the watch ticked against the table.
Without wanting to, she thought of his hands on that steering wheel, and then on her.
Her ears went hot.
"You've got a look," Thaddeus said.
"It's the eggs."
"It is not the eggs."
"I'll tell you something else first." She put the fork down. "Otto has a letter. Claire says it's in my mother's handwriting, from the week she died."
She made herself say the rest.
"It says you're not my grandfather."
She watched his face.
He did not go pale, and he did not look away.
He took a long drink of coffee.
"Your mother," Thaddeus said, "hated writing letters. She sent postcards with four words on them. She once apologized for a funeral by text."
"Is it true?"
"You have my chin, Margot. Look in the mirror."
She laughed, and her eyes stung.
"Otto will forge anything," he said. "He forged your name to a no, so he can forge your mother's hand."
"He'd read it out in front of the board."
