Chapter 8: The Calendar

"I'm at the Drake," Margot said. "In your suite. Your man let me in."

"Margot, wait there. I'm ten minutes away."

"I'll wait."

She hung up and put the phone face down on the long table by the window.

She had come to ask him one more thing about his father.

She had meant to be kind about it.

His laptop sat open next to the loupe, and the screen had woken when the table shook.

A calendar notification slid across it in small white letters.

Wed Oct 28, 3:00 pm. Ellery Hotels, 22nd floor. Corridor. Created Oct 7.

She read it three times.

Oct 7 was three weeks before the day it described.

She stood over the laptop with her coat still on, and her hands had gone cold.

He came in at seven minutes past, with rain on his shoulders.

He saw her face, and he saw the laptop, and he closed the door very gently.

"I can explain that."

"You knew."

"Margot."

"You knew the date. You knew the room." She turned the screen toward him. "You wrote it down on the seventh. I walked in and heard my husband sell my grandfather to a van, and you were already standing behind me."

"Yes."

He did not try to say anything else.

"You let me walk in," she said.

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because you wouldn't have believed me if I'd called. And because I wanted you to hear him say it with his own mouth."
