Chapter 4: The Review
On Monday at nine, I sat in a chair that was too low in the department chair's office.
She had a gray braid, a mug that said STATISTICIANS DO IT SIGNIFICANTLY, and my video paused on her monitor.
Soren stood by the window with his arms crossed.
A man from the dean's office sat beside her and wrote on a legal pad.
"Ms. Pauley," the chair said. "I'll be direct. We received a letter on Friday."
She slid it across the desk.
It was on Whitstable family stationery, signed by a lawyer, and it used the words serious concerns about the candidate's character.
"It says you demanded two hundred and fifty thousand dollars from a family and then abandoned them when they refused to raise it," she said.
"They gave me a check," I said. "I didn't take it."
"The letter says you were holding out."
"The letter is wrong."
The man from the dean's office stopped writing.
"Do you have a way to show that?" the chair asked.
I took out my phone and opened my bank app.
"This is every payment I made toward my own wedding," I said. "Forty-one thousand two hundred dollars, from my own savings. I paid half because I didn't want anyone to say I was marrying for money."
I set the phone on the desk.
"Someone said it anyway."
The chair scrolled with one finger.
