Soren's POV

The department office is quiet at midnight.

I let myself in with my key, turned on one desk lamp and opened the registrar's files on the old monitor.

I had told her I wasn't sure I should.

That was a lie.

I was sure, and I wanted to be wrong.

There were three folders, and each one was a thread.

The first was from three years ago.

It had my offer on top, my own words from back then.

Dear Ms. Pauley, we're thrilled to offer you a place.

I had written it at my desk in this room, and I remembered being proud of it.

Under it was her reply.

It came from her school address, and it was polite.

Thank you for your generous offer. I'm afraid I must decline, as I'm not able to leave Boston. Please stop wasting your department's time on applicants who will never come.

I read it again.

The sentence about wasting time hadn't struck me as odd at the time.

It struck me now.

I scrolled down to the system log.

The admissions portal records every open and every sign-in, and nobody ever looks at it.

My offer had been opened at 1:51 in the morning, Boston time.

The decline had been sent at 2:07.

It had been sent from a webmail login, and the log gave the address it came from.

I copied the address into a lookup page.

It belonged to a company in Boston called Whitstable Realty Partners.

I sat back.

The chair creaked, and the building ticked around me.
