Chapter 14: The Fitting
I wrote back right there on the hauler steps.
"October 14. Who is this?"
The little dots came up.
They went away.
They came up again.
Then nothing, all night.
I showed Sutton.
He read it twice and handed the phone back.
"B," he said.
"There's only one B who'd sign it like that."
"Then she knows something."
"Or she wants to see if I'll bite."
By Tuesday the number had stopped going through at all.
Reba found her in four minutes.
"She posts everything," she said, scrolling with one long fingernail. "Look. Final fitting, Tuesday at two, a bridal shop in SouthPark. She tagged the shop. She tagged the dress. She tagged the man who's steaming the dress."
"I can't just walk into her fitting."
"Sugar, she walked into your motel parking lot at dawn."
I drove myself.
Daddy had sold me his old blue pickup in April for a dollar, because he said a crew chief can't keep borrowing Reba's.
It smelled like his garage.
The bridal shop was white carpet and white couches and a chandelier the size of a tire.
Two shop girls in black looked at my work boots like I'd tracked in a dead animal.
"Do you have an appointment?"
"I'm with the bride," I said, and walked past them.
Brinley stood on a round platform in the middle of three mirrors.
The dress was enormous.
It had a train you could have parked a car on.
Her mother wasn't there.
Nobody was there but a seamstress on her knees with a mouth full of pins.
