I sat in the Subaru with the key in my hand until my fingers went numb.
Then I put the key on my ring next to my own door key and drove to work.
I did not answer Leif.
I drew a hellebore on a nurse's calf and a heron on a man's shoulder, and I said nothing the whole day that was true.
On Wednesday night I slept at Isak's again.
On Thursday morning I woke before he did, and I made up my mind.
I would tell him at breakfast.
I would not wait for a better moment, because there wasn't one, and I had already been looking for it for a week.
He came into the kitchen in his gray cardigan, tucking in his shirt.
He had slept a full night again.
It showed in his face, which had lost its tight look around the mouth.
"Toast?" he asked.
"Please."
He dropped the bread in and took two plates from the cupboard.
