Chapter 14: Kari Home
Kari stood on my front step with a sunburned nose and a paper bag.
Her husband stood one step below her with two suitcases and a face like a man who had been told to wait.
"Custard tarts," Kari said, and shoved the bag at me. "Portugal. Don't talk. Let me in."
She came through my door and stopped dead in the middle of my living room.
I lived in four small rooms over a bakery.
The walls were covered in tattoo flash, my own drawings in black ink on cream paper, hung edge to edge.
Wolves, moths, ferns, a skull wearing a crown of foxglove.
Plants stood on every sill and hung from every hook, and the couch was green velvet that I had found on a curb.
"You live in a forest," Kari said.
"It's the only way I stay calm."
"It's not working. Look at your face."
Her husband kissed her on the temple.
He said he would see his own parents and be back at nine, and he carried the suitcases down the stairs.
I liked him very much.
He did not ask a single question.
Kari sat on my couch with her feet tucked under her and ate a custard tart in two bites.
"How bad is it?" she asked.
"He gave me a key."
"Oh no."
"He is furnishing a place for me," I said. "In a life I got into by lying."
Kari put her hand over her mouth.
"He said Rule two is a bad rule," I told her. "He hasn't said the rest. He said it's quite large."
"That's a Moen sentence for I love you," she said. "Dad said it about my mother for forty years."
