Chapter 16: Rule Seven
"If either of us lies or breaks a rule," Isak read, "the arrangement ends that day."
He did not raise his voice.
He read it the way he read bridge reports, evenly and all the way to the end.
Fourteen people sat around the table and did not breathe.
"Isak," Solveig said.
"Mom, please. Let me finish. I'd like to do this properly."
He took off his glasses, folded them and set them on the sheet.
Without them his face looked younger and very tired.
"I don't know all of it," he said.
"I know there was a plan."
"I know Kari was in it, and Leif, and Mom, and I know Roz knew, because she said yes."
"Yes," I said again.
I owed him a second yes.
"Thank you for not pretending," he said.
His kindness was the worst thing anyone had ever done to me.
"I'm not going to shout," Isak said.
"I've thought about whether I'd want to, and I find that I don't, which is interesting."
"What I find is that I'm trying to work out what was real, and I can't do it with you all sitting here."
