Chapter 25: Ninety-One Thousand
The First Allegheny Bank on Front Street had a lobby with six chairs, a ficus, and a rope line nobody used.
I walked in on the twelfth day with Connie beside me and the bank's letter in my hand.
Vernon Ruskin sat in the third chair.
He wore a plain brown jacket instead of his cut, and he had his hat on his knee.
He looked at me and waited.
"Diana," he said.
I didn't answer him.
The loan officer called us back to a glass office with a fake plant on the desk.
"I wish I had better news," she said. "Mr. Ruskin has sold every bike on his floor, but the dealer's offer for the shop itself comes to fifty-eight thousand."
"And the balance?"
"Thirty-three thousand, due in eighteen days. After that the note goes to foreclosure."
"On my house."
"On the property at 14 Alder Street. I'm sorry."
Connie's hand closed on the back of my chair.
I thanked her, stood up, and walked out into the lobby.
Vernon had not moved.
Four customers stood in the teller line, and two more sat by the window with their deposit slips.
I stopped in front of his chair, and I said it loud enough for all of them.
"You took your name off a loan so my grandmother's house could be sold."
His face stayed still.
"That's business, Diana."
"No. Business is what Dean did when he sold his motorcycle to get me off the paper."
A man in the teller line turned around.
"You called the note in the week your son shouted at you," I said. "You did it to a pregnant woman with a borrowed baby in her house."
