Chapter 26: The Rolling Mile
The Rolling Mile was packed at three on a Thursday.
Truckers sat at the counter with their hats on, and a family of five filled the big booth by the window.
I took the last stool at the end, by the pie case.
The waitress behind the counter was the one who had refused to meet my eye the day Delilah got fired.
She poured my coffee and still didn't look up.
Delilah came through the swinging door from the kitchen in her own jeans and a gray sweatshirt.
She had no apron and no name tag, and her hair was pulled back so hard it hurt to look at.
The manager came out behind her with his arms crossed.
"Two minutes," he said. "Then you're off my property."
"I only need one," Delilah said.
She walked to the end of the counter and stood in front of me.
Forty people were eating, and she waited until the forks stopped.
"My name's Delilah Metzger," she said. "A lot of you know me. You've tipped me, and some of you have asked me out."
Somebody near the register laughed, and she flinched.
"That woman is my sister, Diana," she said. "Some of you saw her in here last fall, asking me one question."
Her voice shook.
"For two years I was sleeping with her husband."
The room went so quiet I heard the pie case hum.
"I told her the father of my baby was a guy who left town," Delilah said. "That was a lie. It's Dean Ruskin's son, and I named him after my sister's boy who died."
A woman in the big booth put down her fork.
"I did it on purpose," Delilah said. "I wanted her to read that name on a banner in front of everybody and hurt like I did."
