Chapter 6: The Paper
"No," I said.
Vernon didn't look up from the card.
"It isn't a question, Diana."
"Then I'm answering one nobody asked. My son is already in that book, third page, in your handwriting."
The room had gone so quiet that I could hear the refrigerator in the kitchen.
"You can't write him in twice," I said. "Not with the same name, and not while I'm alive to read it."
"The boy needs a name."
"Then give him one that is his."
"Wyatt is his."
"Wyatt is mine."
I had not known I was going to say it that flat.
Vernon finally raised his eyes.
They were pale blue and steady, and I had always been afraid of them.
I wasn't afraid of them now.
"Enter him, Dean," Vernon said. "Sign the card."
Dean did not move from the doorway.
"Dean."
"I heard you."
"Then sign it."
My husband walked up the length of the table.
Forty people watched him do it, and nobody touched a plate.
He stopped beside the register and picked up the pen.
He looked at it, and then he put it down on the card, and he laid his open hand over the whole thing.
"She's right, Pop," Dean said.
A chair creaked at the far end of the room.
"I'll enter my son," he said. "I'll give him the Ruskin name, and the club can have every bit of it. But not that first name, and not the middle one, and not tonight."
