Dale left through the kitchen with his cream jacket over his head.

Tabitha went after him, still holding the phone, still live, saying "Daddy, wait" to four hundred thousand strangers.

I opened the front door before the reporter finished knocking.

She was a young woman in a good coat, with a microphone in one fist and a cameraman jogging up behind her.

"Mrs. Carberry? Rosalee Carberry? Can you confirm your husband is the founder of."

"We close at ten," I said.

"I'm sorry?"

"It's a restaurant. People are eating dessert."

I looked past her at the van, and the dish, and the line of phones on the sidewalk.

"Come back tomorrow at two for the pot roast. Bring an appetite. You can ask my husband anything over a plate."

"Will he be."

"He'll be sitting down," I said. "That's all I can promise."

I shut the door and turned the lock.

Behind me twenty-eight tables of strangers were applauding.

Maude, in her corner, lifted her port to me like a toast.

It took until half past eleven to empty the room.

Customers shook Ewan's hand and left cash on the tables, and one woman cried, and a man asked for a photo of the stove.

Ewan said thank you to every one of them.

When the last chair was up, he locked the front door and stood with his forehead against the glass.
