Chapter 21: The Bank
The Lakeshore Savings and Loan on Madison Avenue had a carpet the color of old pennies and a conference room with no windows.
My mother rolled in at ten sharp in her best green dress.
I walked beside her with a folder under my arm, and Ewan came a step behind with the walker folded over his shoulder.
At the glass door of the conference room he stopped.
"I'll wait out here," he said.
"You can come in," said my mother.
"No, ma'am. Rosie's terms."
He sat on a bench in the lobby with his hands between his knees, and a teller leaned over her counter to look at him.
The bank officer was a woman my mother's age in a navy suit, with a legal pad and no smile at all.
She had read about the Chairman of Tern on her phone that morning.
I could tell she was working very hard not to look at the lobby.
"Mrs. Hubbard," she said. "Thank you for coming. I'd like to hear this in your own words."
"I'd like that too," said my mother. "I haven't had much practice lately."
The officer slid a photocopy across the table.
