On the twenty-ninth of December I unlocked the front door of Carberry's for the first time, with Maude's brass key.
It stuck, and then it gave, and the bell above it rang.
Ewan stood beside me on the sidewalk in a clean white jacket, with the silver band on his left hand.
He looked at the glass.
The sign painter had finished it the night before, in gold leaf, in a hand as neat as my mother's.
CARBERRY'S, it said, in big letters.
And under it, smaller, in a line that made my eyes sting.
CHEF EWAN CARBERRY AND ROSIE PICKETT. CHILI ON SUNDAYS. DO NOT IMPROVE.
"You didn't tell me," I said.
"Gram did it."
"Gram did not do it alone."
"I might have paid the painter for the name," he said. "You told me nothing is bought. I didn't think the glass counted."
"The glass counts."
"Then bill me."
"I will," I said. "I'll put it in the jar."
Inside, the dining room was warm and smelled of thyme and hot butter.
By the host stand, in a plain black frame, hung a yellow notice with its corners curled.
