Chapter 22: Two Rings
I picked up the gold ring first.
It was plain and heavy, and it fit my left hand.
"That one is mine," Niall said. "It was my mother's. I was going to put it on you at the altar, and then you tore up the paper and I forgot my own name."
"And the silver?"
Kieran sat up against the headboard with the sheet around his waist.
He wasn't looking at me.
"I bought it eleven days after the first Tuesday," he said. "Out of my own pay. It sat in a sock for two years."
"Kieran."
"I never expected to give it to anyone."
I put the silver ring on my right hand.
The grey stone caught the light.
Niall's jaw tightened a little.
"Say it," I told him.
"I'm not saying anything."
"Niall."
He breathed out through his nose.
"The left hand is the one with the law on it," he said. "And the right is the one you'll hold his with. I know what the rings mean. I'm jealous of the right one anyway."
"Good," Kieran said, dryly.
