On the last Friday of the month the sky over the terminal was a hard clean blue.
The whole yard stood in rows between the containers, and the loudspeaker over the office door was already on.
My father stood at the back with a thermos of coffee for the foreman, in a clean apron.
He didn't come forward.
I had told him he could watch from there.
I walked out of the dock office with the green ledger under my arm.
Niall walked on my left, and Kieran walked on my right.
I wore my mother's cream coat.
I wore her St. Brigid medal on its thin gold chain, and a ring on each hand.
Nobody spoke.
I set the book on a table in the middle of the yard and opened it to the last page.
Nine years of Seamus Carrick's signature ran down the right-hand side.
Below it, in the last fresh lines, was my name.
I picked up Niall's black pen.
"Thirty-nine thousand, six hundred dollars," I said, into the microphone. "This week."
