Chapter 18: The Last Night Before

Dex did not go back to Cottage Four.

Grover watched from the bakery roof, where the badger let him sit with a flask of cocoa.

He reported that Dex walked the square in a slow circle and talked to himself.

Finally Dex sat down on the church steps with the axe across his knees.

"He'll ring the bell soon," Grover said.

"I can feel it."

"He's got the look."

"The look?"

"I stood nights at a warehouse for thirty years."

"I know a man who has run out of other ideas."

By evening the Bear House kitchen smelled of onions.

Grover made soup, because he said a plan should be eaten on a full stomach.

Then he went down to sit with the sleepers, which had become his habit.

Garvan and I stayed at the table.

The lamp hissed.

"The ledger says the least kind guest," I said.

"I know."

"It's Dex."

"Page nineteen."

"It's Dex by a mile."

"I know, Juno."

He turned his cup.

"It might not work."

"The line was cut."

"It might be a joke that does nothing."

"Or it might be the only rule in this place that nobody printed on a sign."

"That's what frightens me."

I put down my spoon.

"All right," I said.

"Say it."
