Chapter 20: Midnight, Again
Odile opened the floor safe at dusk, on her knees beside the bed in Suite 9, with the iron ring in her good hand.
I pulled the mattress aside, and under the white boards was a steel door the size of a dinner tray.
Inside lay stacks of paper, banded in blue, so many that she needed two hands to lift them.
"Four million," she said, and tucked them into a laundry bag without a flicker.
"Odile, what does he want?"
"He told me to open nothing for anyone but you."
"That isn't an answer."
"It's the one I have, love." She patted the bag. "He asked me for a hand with the Table. That was all."
At half past eleven I went down in my grey wool coat, with Enoch's gun against my hip.
Nothing was in my head but his voice in the lift.
Ask me at midnight.
The lobby was so full that the porters had to hold the rope.
The old woman sat in her armchair with her hat on.
