Chapter 17: Mother's Will
The estate attorney came to the penthouse at seven that evening with a cream envelope in a locked case.
He was a small gray man in a raincoat, and he would not sit.
"The terms are clear," he said. "It goes into the hands of Mrs. Thackeray and no one else."
"Drexler," I said. "Hannah Drexler."
"Mrs. Thackeray," he said gently, and held it out.
I took it.
The paper was heavy and soft with age, and on the front, in slanting blue ink, it said, To my son's wife.
Jonas stood behind my shoulder and did not breathe.
"You don't have to read it with me," I said.
"I would like to be in the room."
The attorney let himself out.
We sat on the edge of the sofa, and I slid my thumb under the flap.
There were two pages, folded together.
I read the first page, and I felt my face start to go.
"You should have this," I said.
"She wrote small," Jonas said, hoarse. "I would like to read it myself."
I gave it to him.
