How to Land a Movie Star novel · Chapter 22 of 24

Chapter 22: Premiere

I read it twice by the light of the stars and the smog, and I felt Corin's hand close on my ankle.

"Wills," I said.

"I heard."

"She's using him to get to me."

"Then she'll find out how that goes," he said.

At six on Friday, I stood at the end of the longest red carpet I have ever seen.

The movie palace on Hollywood Boulevard had its marquee lit up.

THE LONG HARBOR ran across it in letters three feet high.

Photographers stood behind the barriers in rows, ten deep.

I wore a navy dress Marj had bought me off a rack, with pockets, and a pencil in my curls.

Wills walked at my right in a rented suit with the sleeves a half-inch short.

Marj walked at my left in her tuxedo jacket, working a stick of gum like she was angry at it.

Corin was in the lobby with the director, and I had asked him to be.

A woman in a grey coat stood at the end of the press line, with a laptop under her arm and her eyes on mine.

She tilted her head one inch.

Behind the barriers, at the front of the pit, a camel trench coat stepped into the light.

The editor had her glasses pushed up in her hair and a lanyard that said BACKLOT DAILY.
