Chapter 7: The Counter

We didn't sleep.

We climbed down the ladder at four.

I went into the guest room and took the little black button out of the sock drawer, where it lay between my winter socks.

When I came back to the kitchen he was standing at the steel counter with the lights off.

The first grey light was coming through the glass, and it made him look carved.

I put the button down in front of him.

It made a tiny click on the steel.

"That's what I came to tell you," I said. "It was in my tote the night I came here."

He didn't touch it.

He didn't say anything at all, and I made myself go on.

"A woman who runs a gossip site gave it to me at a wrap party."

I swallowed.

"She said it was five quiet minutes, nothing mean, just you talking about the film."

My voice was shaking, so I held on to the edge of the counter.

"She offered eight thousand dollars."

"For what?"

"Wills's school had locked his account. I did the math on a napkin and said yes before I finished the contract."

The coffee machine ticked as it cooled.

"I told her the hour I'd be here. I typed it in a text, like I was confirming a haircut."

"Hedy."

"I'm not done."
