Chapter 22: Sabrina's Turn

Sabrina arrived at nine in a taxi.

She got out at the end of the lane and walked up the gravel in flat shoes, which was how I knew something had broken.

She had on a camel coat and enormous sunglasses, and no lipstick, and she carried one small leather bag.

Arlen stepped onto the porch ahead of me, the way he'd stepped into the gallery, and stopped at the top step.

"Mr. Rhodes," she said. "What a sweet little hovel."

"You're on my steps."

"I've been on worse."

She took off the sunglasses.

Her eyes were swollen, and she looked ten years older than she had in the pink dress.

"I'm not here to apologize," she said. "I want that understood. I don't do it, and I'd be bad at it."

"Then why are you here?" I said.

"Because my fiance and I had a conversation last night."

Her mouth made a shape that was not a smile.

"After the guests left, and my mother took the car, he came to my suite with a document."

"What document?" I said.

"A postnuptial agreement, drafted the afternoon of the shower."

"It has a clause about fraud on the marriage. A false claim of pregnancy voids everything I'd have."

"The ring goes back. The house stays his. I leave in the clothes I'm standing in."

"He knew you were lying," Arlen said.

"He's known since your little dinner. He didn't care."

She laughed, an ugly little sound.

"He said a wife is a useful hedge."

"He needs me beside him on Saturday so nothing I say about Pike Bridge can ever be used."
