Chapter 9: Showing the Stick
Sabrina stopped in the bathroom doorway with her shoes in one hand.
She looked at the open cabinet, then at the pharmacy bag.
Then she looked at the white plastic stick between my fingers.
Her face did not fall.
It rearranged itself, slowly, into the pleasant mask I had watched across a dinner table for four months.
"Willa," she said. "How resourceful."
"It says one line."
"It says a great many things." She set her shoes on the marble. "Early tests are unreliable. A woman takes several."
"You took it the morning of the dinner."
"And the second one, that evening, was positive. You wouldn't have found that one. I flushed it for privacy."
"There are three unopened boxes."
"I was thorough."
I should have been afraid.
She was five inches taller and stood between me and the door.
But she had said the second part so smoothly, so quickly, that I knew she had practiced it, and knowing it steadied me.
"You're lying," I said.
"I'm marrying your father in nine days." She smiled with all her teeth. "Say it to him, and see who he believes. The grieving daughter who broke into my room, or the mother of his child."
"You're not a mother."
"I will be, by the time anyone checks." She leaned in, and I smelled gardenia and something sour underneath. "And you, sweetheart, will be a very good girl at the wedding, or your little studio won't be worth the brick."
I slid the stick into the pocket of Arlen's sweater and picked up the bag.
I photographed the receipt with my phone before she could reach for it.
She watched me do it and did not move.
