Chapter 4: Three Terms

I wrote my terms on the embassy's own letterhead, and the Prince of the Lycans signed every one of them.

There were three.

"One," I said. "We are mated in name only. No bed. No bite."

Soren's pen paused over the paper.

"Agreed," he said, and signed.

"Two. You don't touch me unless someone is watching. The pack has to believe it, and I don't have to feel it."

"Agreed."

"Three. When your Rite is done, I walk. No arguments, no bond-sickness speeches, no sad eyes at the door."

That one he read twice.

"If the bond hurts you after the Rite," he said, "I want you to come to me and say so."

"If it hurts me," I said, "I'll decide."

He looked at me for a long moment and signed.

The embassy director witnessed it. Emmett witnessed it. A Lycan envoy in a grey suit stamped it with the court's seal, which I hadn't known was a thing the court owned.

Soren folded the paper in thirds and handed it to me.

"It's yours," he said. "Keep it where I can't get at it."

I put it in my jacket, against my ribs.

Soren slid a ring across the table. It was a plain band, dark silver, set with one small stone the color of smoke.

"It's for the pack," he said. "Wear it on your left hand. They'll know what it means."

I put it on. It fit.

I didn't ask how he knew my size, because I didn't want an answer.

We flew to Montana the next morning, in a private jet with seats that folded flat and a steward who wouldn't look at me directly.
