Chapter 17: Sherman Falls
I was over the stones before Joss could grab my coat.
"Healer!" I yelled. "A wounded wolf, healer enters!"
Nobody stopped me.
Nobody in that clearing was thinking about the charter anymore.
Sherman jerked the blade out of Corwin's side and swung it at my face.
I threw myself backward on the moss, and it whistled past my ear.
"Stay out of the ring, girl."
"It's not your ring."
I was on my knees again, between him and Corwin's body, with the dropper of violet liquid in my right fist.
I had one chance.
The blade was wet and red and white in the torchlight.
I lunged and squeezed one drop of the tincture onto the metal.
It hissed.
The violet bloomed across the edge in a ragged stain, and then the stain went black.
The color ran down the blade.
The old man with the cane saw it first.
"Silver," he said.
His voice rang across the clearing.
"That is silver. In the ring."
"A trick," Sherman said. "A tincture of ink. The girl is a thief and a liar."
"Then try it on this."
The old man stooped, with a grunt, and picked up one of the leather gloves lying outside the stones.
