Chapter 18: Winter Lodge
The first snow came three days later, and it came sideways.
It buried the lodge's porch rail and filled the pine tops with white.
Corwin walked into the great room at noon with a cane that he hated and a bandage under his sweater.
I had told him to stay in bed for a week.
He had lasted two days, which I considered a personal insult.
The great room was packed.
The old man with the cane sat by the hearth, with the five council members who had stood up for me.
The old healer was in a chair with a blanket over her knees.
Joss leaned on the doorframe with a mug of cocoa, and Hettie sat on the rug in front of the fire with her fox and a pile of crayons.
I stood at the window, with my arms folded.
"I am told," Corwin said, in a voice that carried to the porch, "that this is the proper place to do it."
"Do what?" I said.
He put the cane down against the wall.
