Chapter 7: The Run

Corwin read the stationery once, and the paper smoked in his fist.

He did not say a word.

He walked down the stairs in yesterday's trousers and bare feet, and I followed in his T-shirt, with the hem hitting my knees.

The council sat at breakfast in the long dining room, around a table covered in eggs and coffee.

Sherman was buttering toast.

"Alpha," he said. "You look rested."

Corwin put the ruined sheet next to his plate.

"Where is it?"

"Locked in the council vault. Where the stores belong." Sherman took a bite and swallowed. "A thief walked into your private study last night, if I may say so. That alone should tell you the pack has lost its sense of order."

"You took eleven doses out of my safe."

"I took them out of a house where a convicted thief is sleeping." His eyes went over the T-shirt and my bare legs, unhurried. "Under your hand, no less."

Several wolves looked down at their plates.

My face burned, and I made it stay straight.

"My niece needs one dose a month," I said. "That vial was in my pocket yesterday."

"Then apply to the council. We will consider the child's case."

"She's five."

"And every pup in this pack has been waiting six years for a batch," Sherman said, almost kindly. "I'm sure you understand."

I understood completely.

He held the medicine, so he held the child, so he held me.

And he held Corwin by the throat without ever laying a finger on him.

"I'll make you a better offer," Sherman said, wiping his fingers on a linen napkin. "Tonight is the full moon."

Nobody at the table breathed.

"There's an old rite. The Run."

"I know the Run," Corwin said.

"Do you? The pack hunts a thief who has wronged it. She is given until moonrise to reach the border. Any wolf who catches her has her life."
