Chapter 17: Nelly Warm
On Monday at ten o'clock a nurse pushed a needle into the back of my hand, and a bag of clear liquid began to drip.
In a courthouse two hours away, my father and Stewart were sitting down in front of a judge.
I had asked Stewart to call me the minute it was over.
My phone lay on the blanket with the screen up, and I stared at it.
"It's a watched pot," Giles said from the visitor's chair.
"You're not supposed to be here."
"The board suspended me for two weeks without pay. I have nowhere I'm supposed to be."
He had a paper cup of bad coffee and the same pressed shirt.
He had driven in before dawn, and I hadn't asked him to.
I looked at the bag.
"Does it hurt?" he said.
"It's cold, mostly. It goes up my arm."
He got up without a word and took the blanket off the end of the bed and wrapped it around my forearm.
His fingers stayed there a moment longer than the blanket needed.
At twenty to one the phone rang.
"Geneva." It was my father.
"Tell me."
"Temporary order," he said. "The judge read the clinic's letter, and the board's letter, and the Riverview bracelet. She asked Beth's lawyer four questions he couldn't answer."
"And Junie?"
"She stays with Stewart, at our house, with your mother. Beth gets two hours on Saturdays, in a room at the courthouse, with a county worker watching." He cleared his throat. "She didn't cry. She just looked at the judge and waited."
