Chapter 19: The North Slope
The first week of May, I came home on a Saturday pass and found my ex-fiancé on the roof of the church.
He was kneeling on the slope in a canvas tool belt, with a bundle of shingles beside him and a hammer in his fist.
I stood in the gravel lot with my cane and watched him for a full minute before he noticed me.
The pastor came out of the side door with a mug in each hand.
"He's been here every morning since the Monday after the hearing," he said. "Up at five, before school. Saturdays all day."
"Who's paying him?"
"He won't take a cent. I offered twice. He said the leak over the front pew was his doing."
"How is a leak his doing?"
"He says the roof started going the winter you died, and he was too busy to see it." The pastor handed me a mug. "I said that wasn't a reason. He said it was the only one he had."
I drank the coffee.
It was bad and hot, and it was the nicest thing anyone had handed me all week.
"I'd like to talk to him," I said.
"I'll hold the ladder."
"You will not. I'll shout."
I stood at the foot of the ladder, with the cane hooked over my arm, and yelled up, "Stewart!"
He looked down.
He almost slid off the roof.
He scrambled to the edge, and I watched him think about the ladder and about the three rungs he'd have to take to be next to me, and I watched him decide to stay where he was.
"Are you all right?" he called. "Is it Junie? Is it you?"
"Nobody's hurt. Come down."
