Chapter 18: Kit's Voice

I left the house at six, before Mitchell came home from the night.

Camilla's door stayed shut.

I carried a syringe in my bra and my sister's phone in my boot, and I took the bus.

The bakery on Linden Street was dark on Wednesdays.

The owner had pressed a key into my hand at the funeral and told me to come for Kit's things whenever I could stand it.

I let myself in through the back.

The kitchen smelled of cold butter and cinnamon.

Kit's apron hook was by the door, empty, with her name on a strip of masking tape.

I sat down on an upturned flour bin and plugged her phone into the charger on the wall.

It showed a spiderweb of cracks, and for a long minute nothing else.

Then the apple came up, and a lock screen with a photo of the two of us in a rowboat, squinting.

Her passcode was my birthday.

I had known it would be, and I put my hand over my mouth anyway.

In the voice memo app there was a file I had never seen, called New Recording 14.

It had been made at 3:41 on the morning she died.

It was barely two minutes long.

I put my earbuds in.

"Nor." Her voice was a whisper, close to the speaker, and a little slurred from the pain. "If you get this, it means I'm being silly. They put me in a room by myself. I can't sit up."

I pressed my fist against my teeth.

"The tall blonde doctor who came in. She was at your Christmas party, the one with the awful green dress? At the light on River Road I looked in my mirror and saw her face. It was her car. She pushed me, Nor. She was on the phone."

Somewhere behind her a door opened and a man spoke, and her voice dropped.

"That's Mitchell. He's out in the hall with her. She called him babe. I thought I was hearing things."
