"Don't look at me like that," Camilla said.

Her voice carried from the head table to the doors.

"You told me it was her." She pointed at me, and her whole arm shook. "You said Mara would be in the Subaru at ten to three. You gave me the road, the bridge, the hour."

"Camilla, sit down."

"You said it would be clean!"

Four hundred faces turned from her to the stage and back again.

The man in the brown overcoat had stopped in the middle of the aisle with one hand raised, and he let her go on.

"I didn't know it was the sister," Camilla said. "I didn't know until I saw her face in the ER. I called you from the stairwell and you said, 'Then we finish it.'"

"That is enough."

"You held my hand on the line, Mitchell. You put your hand over mine."

She was crying hard now, with her mouth open and her mascara running.

"I did it for you. I did all of it for you. You said when it was over, you'd leave her and marry me."

A board member said, "Good God."

Beside me, Daniel breathed in sharply, once.

Mitchell stepped back from the lectern.

He stood in the white light with his hands hanging empty at his sides, and I watched my husband decide, in front of everyone, what kind of man he would be.

He chose the only one he had ever really been.

His face crumpled.

"I loved her," he said.

It came out thick and wet, and it filled the room through the speakers.
