Chapter 10: The Law

"Not forever," Hades said. "Until she's stopped."

"How long is that?"

He didn't answer, and under rule one, that was an answer.

I left him at the breakfast table.

I needed my own kitchen. I needed a pot of water and a box of pasta and a ceiling I could touch.

So the next night he came to Sunnyside.

He came through my closet, ducking, with a bottle of wine in one hand and the dog's leash in the other.

"No," I said.

"He wanted to come."

"He has three heads. My landlord thinks a cat is a lot."

"He'll stay small."

The dog shook itself in my hallway and was suddenly the size of a beagle, all three heads at once, tails going.

It sat on my bath mat.

It looked delighted with itself.

Danny was at a study group until ten.

I'd made sure.

Hades stood in my kitchen with his head an inch from the light fixture.

He looked at the magnets on my fridge, at Danny's engineering homework taped over the sink, at the chipped mugs.

"You can sit," I said.

He sat at my little table.

His knees didn't fit under it.

I put a bowl of pasta in front of him, with butter and too much cheese, the only thing I cook well.

"Upstairs food," I said. "You're allowed."

He ate the whole bowl.

Then he looked at the pot.

I gave him more without a word, and something in my chest went warm and stupid.

"You said a court can try a god," I said.

He set his fork down.

"The Fates," he said. "Three women. They spin every thread and they cut it. They'll hold court for any god who's accused."
