Chapter 16: Yes
He didn't move.
For one awful second I thought I'd read him wrong.
Me. Golden Hour's best. Seven years of reading hearts across ballrooms, and I couldn't read the one in front of me.
Then I looked.
His heart was dark red, the way it always was.
It wasn't slow anymore.
"Say it again," he said.
It was what he'd said in the ballroom, the first night.
I almost laughed.
"Take me to your room," I said. "I want you. I'm not under anything. Nobody's hand is on my bow."
"You're sure."
"I'm a matchmaker. I'm always sure about other people." I took his sauce-stained cuff between two fingers. "This is the first time I've been sure about me."
He took my face in both hands.
He kissed me in the doorway of the study, slow.
Only this time my hands weren't doing anything sneaky.
They were in his shirt, pulling it loose from his belt.
"Not here," he said against my mouth. "The dog's watching."
All three heads were, from the rug, very interested.
"Upstairs," I said.
"Down," he said. "It's always down here."
He took my hand and walked me through his house.
Past the long table and the thirty-nine chairs.
Past the Book on its stand, closed.
Down a stair I hadn't found in a week of looking for doors, cut into the black rock, lit blue all the way.
Halfway down, I stopped him.
I pushed him against the wall and kissed him, because I could, because it was my idea.
He let me.
He made that low sound I'd felt in my knees in the orchard.
"You're going to make me carry you," he said.
"You keep carrying me places."
"You keep needing it."
"Not tonight," I said, and went down the rest of the stairs ahead of him, on my own feet.
His room was at the bottom.
I'd pictured something like a crypt.
It was a big plain room with a stone floor and a wide bed under a gray wool blanket.
One whole wall was a window, and the black river ran past it close enough to touch.
Blue lights moved deep down in it.
There was a chair with a book face down on it.
That was all.
Three thousand years, and he had a chair and a book.
"It's nicer than mine," I said. "I have a lamp shaped like a duck."
"I know. I saw it through your closet."
"You looked in my room?"
"I had to look somewhere while you knocked."
I turned around.
He was standing just inside the door, watching me, the way he'd stood at the bottom of the porch at the Isles.
Waiting to be asked in.
"Come here," I said.
He came.
He kissed me like he had all night.
Like he intended to keep doing it.
Like there was no place in any world he would rather be.
His hands came up under my sweater.
