I Accidentally Seduced Hades novel · Chapter 30 of 32
Chapter 30: Wedding Night
It tasted sour first, then sweet, then like nothing I had a word for.
Like cold water after a fever.
Something went through me, from my tongue down to my feet, and settled in the soles.
I looked up at Hades.
His shadow went all the way up into the branches.
It spread across the blossoms and the blue lamps, the way it had the first night in the reading room.
I could see it again.
Not hearts. Just him, the way he really was.
"Oh," I said. "There you are."
He didn't say anything.
He put both his hands on my face, the way he had in the study doorway, and his thumbs were shaking.
"Six months," I said. "Every year. On purpose."
"On purpose," he said.
Behind us, Jody yelled, "Can we eat now? She ate. Can the rest of us eat?"
We ate.
The ferryman took the covers off the long table one by one.
Lamb and lemon and potatoes gone gold in the fat.
Bread with honey and figs.
A whole fish in salt. A cake made of pomegranate and sweet spices.
He put the first plate in front of me himself, and stood there with his arms folded.
I ate one potato.
I put my fork down and put my face in my hands.
"Is it bad?" Danny said, alarmed.
"It's the best thing I've ever eaten in my life."
The ferryman unfolded his arms.
"Obviously," he said, and went to serve the cats.
They danced under the trees.
Jody made the man from the Christmas party dance with her three times.
Danny danced with the girl from my first year, the one with the tiara, who taught him a waltz and stepped on him on purpose.
The four doves slow danced the way they had on the landing at the Isles, a long time ago, in October.
