Chapter 6: The Isles
The Isles had never had an address.
Every retirement letter Jody and I had ever read said the same thing. "A white house on the sea, paid for life."
It took me all of Sunday to find it.
The cupid I'd trained, the woman whose heart had jumped at the meeting, texted me a photo at midnight with no words.
A wedding invoice. A catering order for ten. A street on the North Fork of Long Island.
Then she deleted the thread.
On Monday night I knocked three times on my own closet door in Sunnyside.
Danny was asleep in the next room with a box of tissues he didn't need anymore.
"Hades," I whispered.
The closet opened on wet grass and the smell of salt.
He was standing on a lawn in the dark, hands in his pockets, looking up at a house.
It was white and long and lit.
Columns. Balconies. A row of tall windows facing the water.
Somewhere a fountain was running.
"It's pretty," I said.
"It's a farm," he said.
We walked up the lawn together.
My sneakers were soaked by the third step.
At the bottom of the porch stairs he stopped.
I went up two steps before I noticed.
"What?"
"I can't go in."
"You walked into an ER."
"A hospital belongs to nobody." He looked at the front door the way the dog looked at the bathtub. "This is her house. A god can't cross another god's threshold unless the owner asks him in."
"Then I'll ask you in."
"It has to be the owner."
"That's a stupid rule."
"It's an old one. It's kept everyone alive for a long time."
