Chapter 10: Not Like This

I couldn't think of a single thing to say.

So I said the truest one.

"He didn't ask me first."

The King's eyebrows went up.

"No," he said. "He came in at seven, still in his boots, and asked as if his hair was on fire."

"What did you tell him?"

"I told him no." The King set his cup down. "For now."

"Because of my father."

"Because of three hundred thousand crowns." He rubbed his eyes. "If I break one betrothal, your father calls in the whole loan."

"All of it?"

"All of it. I'd have to sell the crown forests to pay him, and I'm not well enough yet to fight."

He looked at me sideways.

"And because I'm not sure what you want," he said. "My son's sure. I'm asking you."

"I want you well, Majesty."

"That's not an answer."

"It's the only one I've got today."

He watched me for a long moment.

Then he waved at the door.

"Go on. Go and shout at him. I can see you're dying to."

Alistair was in the music room at the end of the east gallery.

Nobody went in there since the Queen died.

The harp and the harpsichord stood under dust sheets, and the long windows were half shuttered.

He was standing at the window with his back to me.

He turned when the door shut.

"He told you."

"You went to your father without asking me."

"I'm asking you now."

"Now's too late."

He crossed the room in four long steps.

"I couldn't sit in that sickroom another morning beside your sister talking about the weather," he said. "Not after the warehouse. Not after the boatyard."

"Do you know what the court does to Blanche if you jilt her?"

"Blanche doesn't want me."

"The court doesn't care what Blanche wants!"

My voice came out too loud.
